What it is
A normal deposit saves the buyer's card at checkout so the balance can be charged later. Shopify only allows this on gateways that can safely store a card. These are:
Shopify Payments
PayPal Express
Adyen on Shopify
Stripe (for some merchants only)
We call this automatic mode.
If you use another gateway, like PayFast, Mollie, PagueloFacil or a local card provider, the card can't be saved. In that case, use draft-order mode. The buyer pays the deposit through a Shopify invoice with any payment method you accept, and the balance is sent as a second invoice.
Where to find it
Depositly checks your gateway for you when you create a deposit offer.
Where to find: Purchase options → Create purchase option → Offer terms
If your gateway works, you see a short Deposit mode line that says automatic mode is on.
If it doesn't, you see a Payment gateway warning with a Create in draft-order mode button.
How to check it
In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Payments and see which providers are active.
In Depositly, open Purchase options → Create purchase option.
Look at the Deposit mode or Payment gateway section on the Offer terms tab.
If Depositly can't see your gateway
Shopify only tells apps about Shopify Payments and PayPal Express. If you use Adyen or Stripe, Depositly may ask you to confirm it. You can check it yourself:
Add a product with a deposit offer to your cart.
Go to checkout.
If the payment form appears, your provider works. Confirm it in the app.
If you use a gateway that isn't on the list, switch the offer by hand: Offer terms → Deposit mode → Using another payment provider? Switch to draft-order mode.
Good to know
On a deposit checkout in automatic mode, Shopify hides payment methods that can't save a card. This includes Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay buttons and many local payment methods. This is a Shopify rule. If you want every payment method on the deposit, use draft-order mode.
