With split payments, an order is paid in parts. Each part is a Shopify invoice that the buyer pays from a link in an email. No card is saved, so split payments work with any payment provider your store uses.
There are three types:
Type | Who pays | How it works |
|---|---|---|
Multiple payment | One buyer | Pays part now, the rest by emailed invoice before a deadline you set |
Shared payment | Several people | Each person is invited by email and pays their own share |
Installment payment | One buyer | The total is split into equal parts, with an invoice for each |
You can turn on one type or several in the same offer.
How buyers use it
The buyer opens their cart and clicks Split Payment next to the Checkout button.
They choose how to split the order.
Each part is invoiced by email through a Shopify draft order.
When every part is paid, you fulfil the order.
Where to find it

Good to know
The Split Payment button shows in the cart and cart drawer, not on product pages. Split payments work on the whole cart total. If you want a choice on the product page, use a deposit offer.
Shopify checkout can't split one payment across several cards. "Multiple" means one buyer paying over time, and each part can be paid with a different card or PayPal.
Each paid part becomes its own Shopify order.
You can also create split orders yourself, for example for phone orders. See Create a split order manually.
The Free plan includes 1 split payment offer. Pro has no limit.
