FAQ: Draft orders, POS and phone orders

Can I add a deposit in Shopify's "Create order" screen?

No. Shopify doesn't allow deposits on orders made there. Instead:

  • create a split order in Depositly and email the customer a payment link, or

  • place the order for the customer on your online store, for example on a tablet, and choose the deposit at checkout.

Can I use Depositly only from my admin, without showing anything on my store?

Yes. Create a split payment offer and tick Dashboard only - don't show this on my storefront on the Where it applies tab. Then create split orders from Split payments → Orders → Create split order. Don't create a deposit offer for the whole store.

Can I take a deposit on Shopify POS?

Not on the POS till itself. Shopify doesn't allow deposit purchase options on POS. You can:

  • open your online store on a tablet in the shop and let the customer check out with the deposit there, or

  • create a split order in Depositly and let the customer pay the link on their phone.

In draft-order mode, you can take the balance at the till by opening the draft in Shopify POS → Drafts.

Can I take a card over the phone and charge the balance later?

Depositly can't save a card from a payment link or a phone call. To charge the balance later, the customer needs to pay the deposit through your online store checkout, where Shopify saves the card. Then use Collect now when you're ready.

Can I change a full-payment draft order I already sent into a 50% deposit?

No. Depositly can't take over an existing Shopify draft order. Create a new split order with the same products, split it 50/50, and delete the old draft.

The invoice shows the deposit as a discount. Can I change that?

Yes. Shopify invoices don't have a "deposit" line, so the app lists the products and discounts the invoice down to the amount due. To show one simple line instead, go to Settings → Split payments → Split order contents and choose Single custom line (legacy). You can also rename the discount line with the Checkout discount title on your split payment offer, for example "Deposit 50%, balance due on delivery".
